The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that once promoted togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
